I think that Imus is a crude type of guy. I think if you really listened to his show you’d be surprised by how many jerky type things he says on a daily (even hourly) basis. I think he’s just that old school type of snarky grump. I think that the actual term he used was wrong and I think maybe he thought he sounded cool or gangsta saying it.
I don’t think he should have been fired. I think he should have been punished and/or fined but not fired. If you don’t like someones show, don’t listen. If people don’t listen it will get bad ratings and be canceled. It’s as simple as that and anything otherwise is censorship and it’s just wrong.
I also think many of the people who are tripping over themselves to to attack/defend are doing so just for political (Hilliary/Obama) and ratings (Oprah) points. I think there are many people who (Jesse Jackson/Al Sharpton) are HUGE hypocrites. I also think that if the black community really wants the usage of these types of terms to end. They MUST stop supporting the gansta/hiphop/rap music. The lyrics used in these songs, many of them top ten on the radio is beyond disgusting.
It’s a freaky day in American when Sean Hannity and Rosie O’Donnell are on the same side of the issue. Here is an interesting article in Time about the entire mess. I don’t agree with it all, but it’s a great overview and debate. TMZ uncovers another incident of very un-PC behavior on the MSNBC airwaves and did nothing.
Update: I like what DovBear also had to say on the topic.
