Some Thoughts on New Jewish Music (& Matisyahu's REAL ! NAME)

Ok, I downloaded the first two shows of the new Sameach Music Podcast. I listened to the music samples. It’s a very smart thing. I give them credit. I don’t for the life of me understand why they don’t have a website yet though. I can only imagine the business they would be doing if it was up. Especially now that they have this podcast site. If you want to buy an album, there is no link to it, which seems like bad business.

I bought Pey Dalid a couple weeks ago. I like it. It took me a while to decide. It’s not an album where every song is groundbreaking though. The first few songs are good, I like the first one a lot. I like the song Yom Zeh L’Yisroel. I like Am Yisroel Chai and Shabbat Shalom, the hidden track is really nice. It’s a nice touch too, that it shows number 84 on the cd track screen. (84 being the numerical value of the letters, Pey, Dalid)

Then last week I bought Eitan Katz’s- L’maancha. I was trying to remember where I heard that name before, and then it struck me. We heard it first here. The song we all heard first is really nice, it has a very smooth, relaxed and old style niggun feel to it. The rest of the album is also very good. Some of the songs fall a little flat, but for the most part, they are very creative and original. My favorite songs on this album are Mizmor Shir, L’maancha and the last song, called Niggun. I enjoyed the interview with Eitan on their site here.

You can listen to a (short) clip from Sandy Shmuely’s new album. I’ve enjoyed his stuff in the past (Al Tira) but not a huge fan, it sounds ok. If you want to get an autographed copy (woohoo) you can click here (HT Shloimy)

I’m pretty sure I’m going to buy at least one album from these guy’s they really rock. Matisyahu has a wonderful article (written by him) in the Kosher Spirit magazine. Which came free in my Jewish Press this week.

Amazing fact most people didn’t know (me included) Matisyahu’s hebrew name … not Matisyahu … it’s Feivish Hershal. Yeah .. Whoah. I’d like to have seen Sony promote that name on MTV. The article isn’t up on their website yet, I might scan it later today or tomorrow. I’ll see how busy I am.

So that’s all, what are you listening to?
